Valentine's Day

it was raining, forcing people to stand under the umbrellas
branded with the once bright white Coca-Cola now sun-faded.
We didn’t have to though, because I had my massive coat with the black hood and you had your off-brand baseball cap.
(later you would ask me if you looked better with it on or off
my answer doesn’t matter now)
You offered me a cigarette, index finger grazing mine.
an act i suspected to be deliberate while
behind you rain drops descended from the umbrella onto
an unsuspecting stand-upper laughing with a friend.
What they were saying doesn’t matter at all.
it only matters that you asked
what i would do later that day.
You stopped me before I could answer
(i’m asking, you know, since it’s Valentine’s Day)
oh, how you knew to coax the miserable dreamer
in me.
oh, how excited i was.
oh, how I wanted to disappear into the rain drops.
the Coca-Cola written in white on the red umbrella.
the plastic green chairs getting wet (oh)
the broken part of the pavement where weeds were growing out of.
Why didn’t you let me have what I want?
