Sometimes My Light’s Turned On

Lavender milk, butter on toast, and shrimp cocktail
I tried to not love this life, but to no avail.
A coal mine collapsed, but then some time passed,
My love jumped from the fifteenth floor of the brick red hotel but he kept his crown on his head.
My neighbor’s daughter got leukemia and the candy store on the corner ran out of grape soda,
The faux fur coat came back in stock in my size.
The world is a far more peculiar place than I can surmise.
Nothing dies inside me
Texas winters, rose water, California love
There is much more to see
Much more to fight for.
Sometimes my light’s turned on, and we dance in the kitchen.
An 80’s playlist in the background roars on.
Sometimes my light’s turned on, one second away from turning sullen.
One more song and life goes on.
And remember, the stray dog said, now nothing more than a dark spot on the main road:
Eternal Summer Grill is serving oysters again.
